Special Notes on Course Selection

Course Load: Students must carry a minimum of five courses which meet four times weekly each semester. In addition, Freshmen and Sophomores must also carry a Physical Education class. Exceptions for 5th year students needing only 2-4 credits to graduate

Advanced Placement: There are some opportunities for highly motivated students to gain advanced standing in their freshman year of college. Outstanding work in specialized courses and a high score on the College Board Advanced Placement Tests may enable you to exempt some college courses. These exemptions are determined solely by the colleges. If interested, see your counselor no later than February of your junior year. www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/AP/about.html

Early Graduation: If you are highly motivated, you may qualify for early release by obtaining prior approval from the principal before you select your senior year courses. You must then complete all of your graduation requirements.

Running Start: Project Running Start may be offered in partnership with the New Hampshire Community Technical College System. Some courses may be eligible to earn and transfer college credit at a reduced tuition rate.

Incomplete Grades

Under special circumstances (ie: extended illness) an incomplete grade may be awarded at the end of a quarter. The Registrar must grant permission for an incomplete. The permission must be given prior to grades closing for the marking period. If you receive an incomplete grade for the marking period, you have a maximum of 15 school days to make up the work. You will fail the course if the 15 day requirement is not met.

EHS Course Changes and Drops

Exeter High School develops a master schedule that is based upon student course selection during the registration process. Decisions affecting the number of selections, courses offered, and class size are estimated by these requests. Courses selected during registration are considered to be final choices and the course selection sheet signed by both students and parents is considered to be a contract commitment. Students and parents are given sufficient time and assistance in making choices and are expected to make a full commitment to each course selected. The only course changes that will be considered are:
    1. Student failure of a prerequisite
    2. Creation of an irresolvable schedule conflict due to the development of the
      master schedule.
    3. Cancellation of a course due to insufficient enrollment
During the first three days of each semester, the Guidance Department will conduct daylong conflict arenas to resolve these changes with students. The selection of appropriate course levels should be based upon the written teacher recommendation as indicated on the course selection sheet. If the choice is made to disregard this recommendation, student will be supported, but remain in their selected course for its duration.

Level changes for misplaced students can be initiated by teachers for students who have followed the course recommendation, participated fully in the class, completed all work to the best of their ability, sought extra help from the teacher, and it is determined that the student is inappropriately placed.

 Failure of a Prerequisite

A course that has a prerequisite may not be taken until the prerequisite has been successfully completed. If you fail to achieve this level of mastery, you should audit the first year course. See your counselor.

 Educational Support Center (Resource Room)

The Educational Support Center is open to all students who desire assistance with their schoolwork. You may go to the Educational Support Center during a study hall or free period to work with a teacher or use reference materials, tape recorders or filmstrip viewers. In some situations, you may earn credits for work done in the Educational Support Center. For more information, see the “Special Needs” section.
