Careers Bulletin Board at EHSCareer Exploration

Like most students, you probably do not have a clear idea of what kind of work you want to do when you are an adult. While this is not a great problem, you need to do some regular thinking and talking about your future. You can make better plans today if you have a general idea of your career goals. But don't panic if you don't know what you want to be - many students don't. Working with some of these resources explains the many options open to students and helps you continue your planning to make the most of your skills, talents and opportunities. Some of your options may include:
  • A Four-Year College
  • A Two-Year College or Vocational/Technical School
  • A Planned Year Out between high school and college
  • Working directly after high school
  • The Armed Services
  • Working and attending college part-time
  • Volunteer work (i.e. Peace Corps, City Year, etc.)
So whether you know exactly what you want to do or don't have any idea, meet with your guidance counselor and find out the next step.

Planned Year Out (PYO)

You may wish to plan a year out of school between high school and college. This
enables you to gain experience and maturity (and money!) by working. You may prefer
to travel or experience other enriching opportunities. Talk with your parents and see
your counselor.

Going to Work After High School

Many Exeter High graduates go right to work after graduating. Your high school record
of grades, activities, and behavior will be very important to your getting a good job.
Employers look at your work habits, initiative, reliability, attendance, punctuality and
your ability to get along with others.
